Ottawa Valley Bronze (Primary) Show Circuit: New Rules
table border

There are some new Equine Canada rules that have come into effect for 2009.
They include:

  • NEW RULE FOR BRONZE JUMPERS -minimum time limit

The Course Designer will set a “window” of time that he considers acceptable.  The Time Allowed is set at 325m/min and the minimum time limit at 375m/min which means IF YOU GO TOO FAST YOU WILL BE PENALIZED. Faults will be applied the same as if you went over the Time Allowed.  No exceptions.
  • ‘Hors Concours’ is not allowed at the Primary Shows.  Basically it is not allowed at any of the shows now.
  • Breakaway Cups – Plastic Cups and pins are required for all rings including schooling rings.  Steel cups and steel pins are banned and the fine is $2,000 and loss of insurance if used.
  • A SECOND cumulative refusal, runout and bolting on course results in elimination in all Bronze Divisions (Hunter and Jumpers).
  • A horse/pony must be SERVICEABLY sound in eye, wind and limb.
  • Dress – Black or brown SMOOTH leather half chaps and match boot colour.
  • Only approved helmets of a conservative colour are allowed.
  • ABUSE – Abuse of the horse/pony is strictly forbidden.  Abuse includes, but not restricted to, excessive use of spurs, abuse of whip and brutal use of reins during halts or rein backs, repeated tugs on the horse’s mouth.
  • Excessive use of the whip – the whip cannot be used to vent a rider’s temper.  The whip is not to be used after elimination or after a horse has jumped the last fence on course.  The whip is never to be used overhand, e.g., a whip in the right hand being used on the left flank.  A horse should never be hit more than three times for any one incident.
  • A horse/pony returning to the ring to jog for soundness must have on the complete bridle in which they have shown.
  • Adult riders riding in the Child/Adult Hunter must possess a current ‘Amateur Card’ that can be obtained through Equine Canada.  Show secretaries will be checking for this if you are showing in this division.
  • Conventional standing and running martingales are allowed in hunter classes over fences.
  • In extremely hot weather, with the permission of management only, not the judge, jackets may be excused.

Approved Headgear

Just a reminder that all entry forms have a clause to be signed by parents of Junior competitors verifying that the Junior rider would be wearing a properly fitted ASTM/SEI or BSI approved helmet.  Each show will continue to check helmets.  Junior and Senior riders not in compliance will be asked to dismount, scratched from their remaining classes and will not receive a refund.

Short Stirrup – Open to riders under 12 years as of Jan 1, 2009 on horses or ponies, with max jump height of 18”. Riders are eligible only for the pre-novice division in addition to this one. The walk/trot class will be judged as an equitation class and the other three classes in this division will be judged as a hunter division (Walk/trot class points not to be included in division championship calculation nor towards overall short stirrup year-end awards).

Pre-Novice – Open to all riders, whom may only cross enter into short stirrups OR novice. If not competing in short stirrups these riders may cross enter into novice rider and novice equitation. Maximum height 2’. This division is intended for riders in their first year of showing with the exception of the short stirrup or beginner divisions.

Green Hunter - Open to all horses and ponies in their first or second year of showing. Maximum height 2’3”.

Pony Hunter – Open to all ponies, ridden by a junior rider, with maximum height 2’3”. Show organizers may leave lines at the same distance as is already set; OR reset the lines for each pony size (small, medium or large). To be judged as one division.

Novice Rider – Open to riders who have not won three firsts over fences in a recognized, trillium or OVPSC show. Maximum height 2’3”. Excluding ribbons won in short stirrups, pre-novice and/or beginner.

Novice Equitation – Specifications same as novice rider. Maximum height 2’3”.

Child/Adult – Open to horses and ponies ridden by an amateur or child. Maximum height 2’6”.

Low Hunter – Open to all riders, horses and ponies. Maximum height 2’9”.

Open Equitation – Open to all riders, horses and ponies. This class will be judged as one, however; it will have two sections one at 2’6” and one 2’9”. Riders to jump the max height that they have competed at during that day. (eg. if you jumped child/adult at 2’6” and low hunter at 2’9” you would jump in the 2’9” section).

Training Hunter – Open to all riders, horses and ponies. Maximum height 2’6”.

Hack Division – Open to all horses. (Will qualify as an optional division for year- end awards if offered by 6 shows)

2009 Bronze Jumper

Class 1- Table A 2.33 with no jump off (245.6) max height 2’6”.  Approximately 9-10 jumping efforts.  This class will have a time allowed & a time limit.  There will be only one round of jumping.  Competitors completing the course within the time allowed and with no faults will receive 3 points towards the high point award.  Points accumulated here will also count towards year-end awards.  Only clean rounds will be awarded points.

Class 2- Bronze Jumper Equitation 2’6”- this class will be one round with a time allowed.  The top four will return for a flat phase consisting only of the walk, trot & canter (no tests are permitted).  No professionals allowed.  Results from this class do not contribute towards the high point jumper of the day, but Bronze Equitation will have a year-end award.

Class 3 – Table A with a jump off, 2’6 –2’9” (50% of obstacles at 2’9”)
Those advancing to the jump off, will jump off in a “back to back” method.  This method as follows; the first rider in the ring goes clear, exits the ring, the second rider in the order goes with 4 faults, the first rider re-enters the ring & jumps off, the third rider in the order enters for their first round and so on.  There will be a time allowed and a jump off t/a, competitors must go double clear to gain points.  For example, if you advance to the jump off and have 4 faults in the j/o with a time of 35 seconds you will not receive a ribbon regardless of the others results.  If Sally jumps off clear in a time of 36 seconds, Bruno is also clear in 38 seconds, & no other competitor is double clean then only Sally & Bruno will receive ribbons -1st & 2nd with no other ribbons being awarded.  They will receive 7 & 5 points respectively towards the high point jumper of the day.

Class 4 – Table A with a jump off, 2’6” –2’9”(50% of the obstacles at 2’9”).
Back to back method to be used as above.  This class will follow regular Table A rules and competitors will be placed according to their time & faults.

2009 Non-Core Divisions
* These must be run after the core program and do not count for year-end awards.

Beginner – Open to all ages of riders who may not enter any other division.

Open Hunter – Open to all competitors. Maximum height 3’.

Year-End Awards

Points are awarded to all exhibitors who place at an OVPSC ‘Bronze’ show.  Although it is permissible to compete in an under saddle class of a performance division, those exhibitor’s points are not eligible for championship calculation nor for year-end inclusion.  You must attend four OVPSC ‘Bronze’ shows to qualify and only your top 5 competitions will count towards year-end calculations.  Champion, Reserve Champion, Third, Fourth and Fifth place will be recognized.  An Awards Banquet will take place in late March or early April for competitors, coaches, stables and families.
